Our Story
The Sowo Group was born from lived experience—not a business plan.
Our founder Uwingablye Sowo Cunningham grew up in highly competitive independent school environments where excellence was expected and performance was constant. Her parents ensured she had access to top-tier tutors, learning specialists, and academic supports.
Yet despite these resources, something fundamental was missing.
Uwingablye is physically differently abled, and while academic instruction was abundant, the root of her challenges was never addressed. Her nervous system was under chronic strain—overstimulated, overwhelmed, and expected to perform without tools for regulation.
More tutoring did not lead to clarity.
More support did not prevent burnout.
What she needed were skills—not more information.
What Traditional Support Missed
Academic support focused on what to learn, not how to function.
No one taught her how to regulate stress, manage nervous system overload, initiate tasks without paralysis, or recover from burnout.
At the same time, moving through spaces with little representation added another layer of strain. Being one of the few often meant being misunderstood—her behavior misread, her needs minimized, her presence scrutinized.
These moments were subtle, but cumulative. They shaped how she learned, performed, and recovered from pressure.
The Students We Serve
When Uwingablye began working with students over a decade ago, she saw the same patterns repeating.
Bright students with busy minds.
Students labeled as “distracted” or “disruptive” when they were overwhelmed.
Students experiencing procrastination and task paralysis—not from laziness, but from cognitive overload.
Many of these students weren’t thinking about college yet. They were in middle school, learning how to survive school without tools for emotional intelligence or executive functioning.
The issue wasn’t motivation.
It was capacity.
How TSG Evolved
What started as tutoring, test preparation, and college support has evolved over 11 years into a holistic coaching and educational company.
Today, The Sowo Group focuses on the entire student—not just academic outcomes.
We build emotional intelligence, executive functioning, nervous system regulation, and metacognitive skills that support students far beyond the classroom.
College may be one milestone—but it is not the end goal.
